DIAGNOSE IT IN ORDER
WhatsApp Business auto reply not working? Check these in order
Most auto replies that look broken are working exactly as configured. The usual causes are a schedule tied to business hours that were never set, a recipients filter excluding your test number, or a greeting message that only fires for first-time chats, which your own test is not.
The short version
- Check the recipients filter first. Testing from a saved contact defeats most configurations.
- Outside business hours does nothing if business hours are blank or the time zone is wrong.
- Greeting messages only go to first contacts, so an existing chat can never trigger one.
- If the number moved to the WhatsApp Business Platform, the app's automations no longer apply.
Check these eight things, in this order
Ordered by how often each one turns out to be the answer, so you can stop as soon as you find it.
-
Confirm you are in the WhatsApp Business app
Settings should contain a Business tools entry. If it does not, this is the consumer WhatsApp app, which has no auto reply feature at all.
-
Check the recipients filter
Open the away or greeting message and look at Recipients. If it is set to everyone not in your contacts and you are testing from your own saved number, the message is correctly not being sent. Test from a number that has never been saved.
-
Check the schedule against the clock
If the schedule is outside business hours, open your business profile and confirm the hours are filled in for every day, including the closed ones. Then confirm the phone's time zone is the business's, not one left over from a trip.
-
Confirm the toggle is on and saved
The switch and the Save button are two separate actions, and leaving the screen with Back keeps the old state. Reopen the screen and check what it says now rather than what you remember doing.
-
Remember what a greeting message is for
It goes to people messaging your business for the first time, and again after a long gap. Testing from a chat that already has history will not trigger it, however correctly it is set up.
-
Stop repeat-testing the same number
Automatic replies are not sent again and again to the same person for every message they send. Two or three tests in a row from one number will look like a failure and is not.
-
Re-check the settings after any phone change
New phone, reinstall, or a restored backup. Open Business tools and confirm the messages are still there, still switched on, and still carry the right schedule.
-
Find out whether the number is on the Platform
If you or a provider moved the number onto the WhatsApp Business Platform, the app-level automations stop applying. Automatic replies then come from the software connected to the Platform, and that is where the setting lives.
Symptom to likely cause
| What you are seeing | Most likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No auto reply at all, ever | Consumer app rather than the Business app, or the toggle was never saved. | Check for a Business tools menu, then reopen the message screen and confirm the switch is on. |
| Away message never fires | Schedule is outside business hours and the hours are blank, or the time zone is wrong. | Fill in business hours for all seven days, then check the phone's time zone. |
| Fires during opening hours | Schedule is set to always send, or the business hours are wrong for that day. | Switch the schedule to outside business hours, or correct that day's hours. |
| Some people get it, others do not | The recipients filter is excluding saved contacts or using a specific list. | Set Recipients to everyone while you test, then narrow it again. |
| Greeting message not showing | The test chat already exists, so the customer is not a first contact. | Test from a number that has never messaged the business. |
| It stopped when we changed provider | The number was migrated to the WhatsApp Business Platform. | Configure the automatic reply in the software connected to the Platform instead. |
How to test it so the result means something
- Use a phone whose number is not saved in your business contacts.
- Make sure that number has never messaged the business before, if you are testing a greeting.
- Test outside opening hours, or temporarily switch the away schedule to always send.
- Send one message and wait, rather than sending three.
- Test from a real second phone, not from a linked device on the same account.
- Set your filters back afterwards, and check them once more the following morning.
When it is not a bug
A large share of not working reports turn out to be the feature meeting its own limits. The away message fired, the customer read we will get back to you, and nothing happened next, so it feels broken.
It is worth naming that separately, because no amount of settings work fixes it. The built-in tools were designed to acknowledge a message, not to answer one. They cannot look at what was asked, cannot see your prices, and cannot check whether Thursday at four is free.
If that is the actual complaint, the fix is not in Business tools.
A reply that cannot silently fail
Elily answers on your own business number from your real services, prices and hours, and hands over to your team when a person should decide. You can watch every conversation, so a reply that did not land is visible instead of invisible.
QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU START
Common questions
Why is my WhatsApp Business auto reply not working?
Most often the recipients filter is excluding the number you are testing from, or the schedule is set to outside business hours while the business hours are blank. Check both before anything else, then confirm you pressed Save and that the app is the WhatsApp Business app.
Why is my greeting message not showing?
Greeting messages are sent to people contacting your business for the first time, and again only after a long gap. If the chat already exists, no greeting will be sent no matter how the setting looks. Test from a number that has never messaged you.
Why does my away message only work sometimes?
Two common reasons. The schedule may be tied to business hours that are wrong for certain days, and automatic replies are not resent to the same person for every message, so repeat tests from one number look inconsistent.
Did an app update turn my auto reply off?
Settings normally survive updates, but they do not always survive a phone change, a reinstall or a restored backup. After any of those, open Business tools and confirm the messages are present, switched on and carrying the right schedule.
My provider set up the WhatsApp API and now auto reply is gone. Why?
Once a number is registered on the WhatsApp Business Platform, the app's built-in automations no longer apply to it. Automatic replies then come from the software connected to the Platform, so that is where the away and greeting behaviour has to be configured.

THE NEXT MESSAGE CAN BE HERS
Fix the setting, then fix the ceiling.
Once the away message works, ask whether it is doing enough. Send Elily your website link and see what a reply that reads the question looks like on your own number.
