How do the cost structures differ?
Voice has a floor. Every call holds a line open, converts speech to text and back in real time, and is billed by the minute somewhere in the stack. That cost exists whether or not the call becomes a booking, which is why voice products price monthly and cap minutes.
Chat does not work that way. Replies inside the 24-hour window a client opens by messaging you carry no Meta message fee under current published rules, so the marginal conversation costs close to nothing. This is the whole reason a free tier is arithmetic on WhatsApp and marketing on voice.
Which one do your clients actually prefer?
Look at what they already do rather than what you offer. If your phone rings all day, they prefer voice. If your personal WhatsApp is full of booking requests, that question is already answered.
Demographics matter less than habit here. Plenty of businesses assume older clients want to call and discover their messages are full, because messaging removed the fear of interrupting someone.
Where does voice genuinely win?
Urgency and emotion. A client in pain wanting an emergency appointment should reach a person, not a thread. Anything requiring reassurance in the moment is worse in text.
Voice also wins where the caller has no alternative — a landline-only client, or an enquiry from someone who found you in a directory and dialled without thinking.
Where does chat genuinely win?
Anything that benefits from a record. Prices quoted, times agreed, preparation instructions, cancellation policies — all of it stays scrollable for both sides, which ends the "but you said" conversation permanently.
It also wins on parallelism and patience. Chat handles several conversations at once without a queue, and a client can reply at midnight and again at seven without either of you feeling it was odd.
Can you run both?
You can, and larger clinics often do: voice for urgent calls, chat for bookings and routine questions. The cost question then becomes whether the voice line earns its monthly floor.
For a single-location salon, studio or small clinic, picking the channel your clients already use is usually the better answer than paying for both.
